2002 Season

We will be racing at Sandusky Speedway regularly in the 2002 season in the Sportsman division.  We put a new body on the car, did some chassis / suspension improvements, and built a little more horse power for the new season.  Looking to place in the top 5 in points this year.

We got the engine pulled, swapped the crank shaft, timing chain, and pushrods, got the engine back in the car and running just in time. Car was very tight in the heat race. We loosened the car up for the feature race and it handled really well.  The feature race had 4 cautions with 3 of them being red flags.  I led the last 15 laps, but on the last lap there was a caution and I ended up running out of gas.  We’ll be using a new fuel strategy from now on.

Car was very tight in the heat race. The engine didn’t seem to be running as strong as it should either.  In the feature race, the car handled pretty well, but still the engine was weak.  With about 4 laps to go, the crank shaft nose broke and I pulled off. We installed a gear drive last week, that was a mistake.  We won’t be running a gear drive again. Hopefully we’ll get it back together for next week.

Found the right-front break caliper leaking after the heat race. After the feature race we notice the right-rear break cylinder leaking. Had a mid-turn push all day, probably from the breaks leaking.S

The car was hooking up good during the second set of hot laps till I got run into the wall by the 55 car.  Left side of the body got messed up pretty good, steering arms all bent, shocks bent, rims bent.  Had a hard time steering the rest of the day. Plan to replace all the steering arms and get it steering better for the next race.

In the first set of hot laps, a bolt stripped out of a mount for the front sway bar. A trip to Auto Zone for a tap-n-die set and a bolt fixed that.  Missed the second round of hot laps fixing the sway bar.  We didn’t qualify as fast as we wanted to, got some handling issues to solve yet.

Feature Race: 4th

Had a lot of wind and rain.  They only ran feature races to try and get the races in before the weather got any worse.  We started 5th of 5 cars, finished 4th.
